Basic Function:        


Responsible for accomplishing work in re-railing operations, maintenance and repairs of railroad cars and load adjustment activities. Assists in other work activities in support of Cranemasters’ business operations.


Essential Functions:


  1. Perform all aspects of job safely.
  2. Operates equipment (cranes, backhoes, excavators, skid steer, etc.) in order to accomplish tasks related to re-railing overturned railroad cars/locomotives, grading or other preparation for railroad construction and related activities.
  3. Assists in assembly and disassembly of equipment and related components.      
  4. Assists in inspecting, disassembly and repair of cranes, rail road cars, locomotives and related components.
  5. Assists in rigging and connection of chains, cables and winches as directed/trained in accomplishment of work including derailments.
  6. Loads materials at beginning of shift as needed; restocks trucks with materials, tools, equipment as needed upon return to home base.
  7. Distributes materials and equipment at project site.
  8. Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  9. Assist in maintaining cleanliness of vehicles and equipment.
  10. Works with hydraulic tools, welding, cutting with torches, electrical tools and common hand tools.
  11. Sorts scrap materials and ensures placement in designated locations.
  12. Performs all work assignments in a manner resulting in safe, smooth and efficient functioning of the department.
  13. Remain flexible and ready to perform work for other departments/divisions as may be required to meet business needs and customer expectations.


Required Skills and Experience:


  1. Highly skilled Heavy Equipment Operator with a minimum of three years’ experience in operation of backhoe, excavator, and other heavy equipment.
  2. Must be capable of understanding and following directions.
  3. Display strong adherence to safety policies and procedures.
  4. Able to read, write and speak English
  5. Must pass qualification tests as required. 

Physical Demands:


  1. Constantly on feet
  2. Walking / carrying loads on uneven surfaces and in ballast.
  3. Working extended hours.
  4. Constant bending, twisting, stooping, standing and / or walking.
  5. Regular lifting of up to 50 pounds; loads in excess of 50 pounds and which can be reduced, should be made lighter.
  6. Employee must obtain assistance when lifting items weighing more than 75 pounds, or items which present ergonomic challenges in lifting/movement/placement.
  7. Requires significant physical stamina to perform semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor using various power and manual tools in all weather conditions.

Required Certifications and Licenses:


  1. Valid Driver’s License & Valid Commercial Drivers’ License - Class A
  2. Up-to-date D.O.T. medical card
  3. Preference for Equipment Operators with valid CDL and/or ability to obtain same.
  4. E-Rail Safe
  5. Ability to obtain CSX On Track Safety Certification
  6. Other certifications will be obtained as required. 

Note: Cranemasters is a 24/7 emergency service provider to the railroad industry and as such, the Equipment Operator is subject to work outside of normal working hours including nights, weekends and/or holidays.
