Overview

Basic Function:  Responsible for project management and control of manufacturing processes for rebuild projects, as well as original manufacture, of heavy equipment including cranes, trailers, trucks, excavators, and similar vehicles/machinery. Continuously drives process improvement initiatives to increase effectiveness and efficiency.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

 

  1. Reviews, plans, and schedules work to ensure production output and on-time delivery targets are met. Ensures that manufacturing activities are carried out in cost effective manner while meeting quality standards.
  2. Develops reporting tools to communicate to relevant stake holders including customers, employees, vendors, designers, and fabricators to identify and resolve any potential interruptions to manufacturing/rebuild schedule.
  3. Works closely with the Director of Manufacturing to ensure that daily and weekly production schedules are adhered to. Adjusts as necessary obtaining approvals for any changes in accordance with standard procedures.
  4. Supervises Foremen to ensure timely and efficient delivery of maintenance, repairs, rebuilds and manufacture of heavy equipment, trucks, cranes, and specialty equipment for both internal and external customers.
    • Paint Shop
    • Welding and Fabrication
    • Heavy Equipment/Diesel and Hydraulic Repairs and Maintenance
    • Tear Downs of equipment/trucks for rebuilds (organization of parts and components, cleaning/grinding/sanding of same).
  5. Manages purchasing function to ensure that materials are purchased in a cost-effective manner and available at scheduled production/installation dates.
  6. Manages inventory function to control stock and raw materials, ensures that deliveries are properly receipted and that materials/equipment/parts are properly located, stored, and transferred effectively and efficiently.
  7. Ensures that manpower is sufficient to meet production requirements and that staff members possess necessary competencies, skill sets, knowledge, and abilities to meet the company’s needs for manufacturing/rebuilds.
  8. Pre-plans production in collaboration with other managers/supervisors/engineers. Deploys daily prioritized work schedule to shop floor with appropriate timeline targets.
  9. Adjusts production schedule as may be required and communicates any change to delivery date with customer.
  10. Develops and implement standards for manufacturing time frames and targets for on time deliveries. Ensures that all “non-value added” activity is reduced/eliminated by using lean/kaizan tools and techniques.
  11. Manages change to meet business requirements. Implements manufacturing processes and systems to reduce inventory, increase throughput and minimize costs.
  12. Ensures that all manufacturing tools and equipment are maintained and repaired.
  13. Ensures that production/quality processes, equipment being used and work environment is conducive to producing a high-quality product.
  14. Monitors production activity to ensure that appropriate manufacturing methods are employed and that sufficient care is taken to meet customers’ build and quality specifications are met. Identifies and rectifies any issues related to non-conformance.
  15. Establishes goals and objectives for continued technical and professional development for self and team. Works with departmental supervisors and lead staff to support assigned team members in improvement of job performance/abilities/knowledge and competence.
  16. Develops necessary documents/manuals for customer/end user for reference related to maintenance and operation of deliverable.
  17. Responsible for timely and accurate submission of project reports, payroll information, equipment usage and other data necessary for customer billing and payroll accomplishment.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience:

 

  1. Bachelors’ degree in business/project management/industrial engineering or related field.
  2. Possesses a broad background in manufacturing with a wide range of knowledge on manufacturing and production processes.
  3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Expertise in Microsoft Project desired.
  4. Working knowledge of planning, scheduling, procurement, MRP, stock management, employee health and safety, principles of lean manufacturing and strong problem-solving skills.
  5. Strong and proactive communication skills to coach/counsel employees, conduct job briefings, debriefings and communicate across the organization as necessary to improve and enhance organizational effectiveness.
  6. Thorough understanding of and adherence to safety policies and procedures.
  7. Must project positive and professional image to customers, co-workers, and the general public.
  8. Able to read, write and speak English.
  9. General understanding of railroad activities/business preferred.
  10. Prior experience in project management, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
  11. Strong presentation skills and ability to motivate and influence others.

Physical Demands:

 

  1. Able to effectively manage stress related to deadlines, timeframes, production activities, employee challenges and issues, along with other problems typical of any manufacturing work environment.
  2. Walking / talking / sitting / standing as needed to meet with employees, travel to various work sites, conduct meetings, etc.
  3. Working extended hours as necessary.
  4. Answering emergency calls as needed in after hours situations.

 

Required Certifications and Licenses:

 

  1. Valid Driver’s License.
  2. Other certifications as may be as required based upon accepted manufacturing practices.

 

Required Travel:  Yes, up to 20%
