Overview

Basic Function:      

 

As directed by the Division Manager assists with leadership and management of the division by assisting with day-to-day operations and acting as a back-up in the absence of the Division Manager. Daily leads work crews in performance of daily work and emergency response needs in support of lifting and recovery operations on behalf of railroad customers.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

 

  1. Proactively acts as liaison between division staff and Division Manager to ensure that critical messages are incorporated into daily activities, i.e. Cranemasters Mission, Vision, and Values – most importantly Safety.
  2. Assists Division Manager with day to day operations. Manages ReRail Supervisors and Foreman to ensure that work crew is prepared to carry out assignments.   Oversees selection of required equipment, materials, and manpower. In the absence of the Division Manager provides leadership to other department managers.
  3. Regularly participates in train re-railing activities to ensure safe and efficient delivery of specialty lifting services. Includes hands-on work in driver/operating trucks and/or heavy equipment.
  4. Participates and supervises in load adjustment and other work in support of Cranemasters business lines.
  5. Establishes and maintains positive/professional relationship with oversight agencies as required (includes FRA and other agencies that participate in emergency response projects).
  6. Directly interacts with railroad customers at all levels (managers, superintendents, engineers). Proactively communicates and follows-up with them on projects and ensures their expectations are met or exceeded. Supports maintaining and improving current customer relationships and under direction of Division Manager resolves customer concerns and implements corrective actions when needed.
  7. Performs administrative functions in an accurate and timely manner to ensure prompt and accurate payroll and billing processes can be completed.  
  8. Works with Division Manager and/or Business Development Managers to identify and pursue new customer relationships and new business opportunities.
  9. Coaches and counsel’s supervisors, foreman and employees to develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities. Provides on-the-job training and provides opportunities for employees to develop their skill sets including technical skills and interpersonal relationship and communication skills.
  10. Ensures that Cranemasters policies, procedures and work processes are carried out properly. Trains employees to ensure that they understand policies and procedures and comply as needed for smooth operations and flow of communications across the organization.
  11. Develops and continuously improves communication skills to better lead work crews, further customer relationships and foster other relationships.
  12. Assesses employee performance to conduct performance reviews. Meets with employee to provide accurate and valuable feedback regarding job performance. Identifies training needs and goals for further development of employee’s skills and works to ensure that employee is afforded opportunity during the following review period to attain established goals. Performing all duties which ensure the safe, smooth, and efficient functioning of the department.
  13. Complete weekly safety observations.
  14. Monitors the response time for emergency calls to maintain our published one-hour response time. Identify problems in meeting the goal, discuss the issues with the Division Manager and develop a plan for corrective action.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Travel: Up to 60%

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience:

 

  1. General knowledge of railroad and related industries with an understanding of rigging, transportation, freight car repair and recovery.
  2. Minimum of 5 years progressively responsible management or supervisory experience in related industry.
  3. Education to include: High School Diploma, significant railroad/related supervisory/management experience and formal education as would be equal to a bachelor’s degree and three years of work experience.
  4. Strong communication, team building, organization, and administration skills with detail orientation to ensure smooth day to day operations and keep detailed accurate records.
  5. Strong time management and multi-tasking skills.
  6. Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
  7. Thorough understanding of and adherence to safety policies and procedures.
  8. Must project positive and professional image to customers, co-workers, and general public.
  9. Proficient computer skills.
  10. Able to read, write and speak English. 

Physical Demands:

 

  1. Accepting responsibility can cause occasional stress.
  2. Constantly on feet.
  3. Walking / carrying loads on uneven surfaces and in ballast.
  4. Working in ALL weather conditions.
  5. Working extended hours.
  6. Answering emergency calls as needed.
  7. Constant bending, twisting, stooping, standing, and / or walking.
  8. Lifting up to 50 pounds continuously. 100 pounds intermittently. 

Required Certifications and Licenses: 

  1. Valid Commercial Driver’s License – Class A.
  2. E-Rail Safe.
  3. CSX, NS and other railroads or customers On-Track Safety.
  4. Rigging Inspection.
  5. Other certifications will be obtained as required.

 

Note: Cranemasters is a 24/7 emergency service provider to the railroad industry and as such, the Assistant Division Manager will be subject to work outside of normal working hours including nights, weekends and/or holidays.
