Basic Function:


Responsible for maintenance, repair and rebuilds of vehicles and equipment for internal and external customers of the Equipment Shop at the Division. Provide guidance and assistance to other mechanics in accomplishment of assigned mechanical tasks for maintenance, repair and rebuilds of equipment and vehicles.


Essential Functions:


  1. Responsible for execution of maintenance, repairs and rebuilds of vehicles and equipment for internal and external customers ensuring compliance with all safety rules/regulations.
  2. Ensures that all Cranemasters’ safety policies are followed and that job briefings are completed regularly and when necessary.
  3. Diagnoses equipment failure in order to assist mechanics in repair, adjustment, servicing and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  4. Demonstrates repair and maintenance processes and procedures to mechanics in order that they will be able to perform these tasks independently in the future. Includes instruction on proper use of tools, equipment diagnosis, inspections, disassembling engines, examination for wear and tear/defects, and preventative maintenance.
  5. Prepares estimates and reviews with Assistant Director of Fleet Maintenance. After obtaining approval from the Asst. Director of Fleet Maintenance to proceed with execution of repairs outlined in estimates, orders parts for maintenance, repair and rebuilds of both Cranemasters and external customers vehicles and equipment.
  6. Completes required documentation and paperwork in order to meet DOT requirements. Prepare documentation (signs-off on documents, file documents, follows-up as needed) in order that appropriate records are maintained for the Division. Note: These records are subject to audit by DOT, regular review/audit of these records will be undertaken by the Assistant Director of Fleet Maintenance.
  7. Proactively communicates to the Assistant Director of Fleet Maintenance in order that the they may keep customer apprised of progress or status changes on work in progress.
  8. Responsible for quality control and achievement of zero return/re-work goal for self and other mechanics at the Shop.
  9. Subject to filling 24/7 call-in to assist in derailments and/or equipment failures that occur in the field.
  10. After obtaining approval from Assistant Director of Fleet Maintenance to make purchases, ensures that adequate inventory of parts/materials are on hand in order to perform regular maintenance and repairs. After coordinating and obtaining approval from the Assistant Director of Fleet Maintenance, orders specialty parts to ensure quality and cost-effective purchases.
  11. Fills in for Assistant Director of Fleet Maintenance in his absence at the Division.
  12. Ensures that all shop employees utilize appropriate safety equipment.
  13. Responsible for overall cleanliness and organization of shop tools and equipment.
  14. Completes paperwork for payroll/billing in a timely and accurate manner.
  15. Maintains a positive team environment, counsel and coach employees and offers constructive criticism and feedback, leads by example.
  16. Assists with hiring of new employees.
  17. Assists the Assistant Director of Fleet Maintenance with performance management of shop employees.
  18. Works closely with 2nd Shift Shop Supervisor to maintain consistency between shift regarding performance, atmosphere and discipline.
  19. Under supervision of Assistant Director of Fleet Maintenance and with guidance from HR, delivers discipline when necessary.
  20. Other duties as assigned.

Required Travel: Up to 30% in order to respond to equipment failures in the field, accomplishing work at customer sites and responding to emergency derailment calls.


Required Skills and Experience:


  1. Minimum of five years demonstrated maintenance experience with heavy equipment and/or track/trailers/cranes, etc.
  2. Education to include: High School Diploma/GED AND trade school/or dealership/factory service training in diesel mechanical repair/maintenance that would be equivalent to an associates degree.
  3. Prefer that incumbent possess a valid CDL-A in order to test drive equipment and assist in emergency calls for derailments and equipment failures.
  4. Proficient computer skills.
  5. Able to read, write and speak English 

Physical Demands:


  1. Constantly on feet
  2. Walking / talking / sitting / standing / kneeling / climbing / stooping/ bending / carrying materials/parts as needed to provide support, advice and support to superintendents and shop personnel
  3. Working in ALL weather conditions.
  4. Working extended hours.
  5. Constant bending, twisting, stooping, standing and / or walking.
  6. Regular lifting of up to 50 pounds; loads more than 50 pounds and which can be reduced, should be made lighter.
  7. Employee must obtain assistance when lifting items weighing more than 75 pounds, or items which present ergonomic challenges in lifting/movement/placement. 

Note: Cranemasters is a 24/7 emergency service provider to the railroad industry and as such employees are subject to work outside of normal working hours including nights, weekends and/or holidays.


Required Certifications and Licenses:


  1. Valid Driver’s License with good driving record
  2. Other certifications as may be necessary for accomplishment of assigned responsibilities.
