    Basic Function:        


    Responsible for managing job tasks or complete projects, ensuring that customers’ expectations for service delivery are met.   Leads work crews in performance of daily work and emergency response needs in support of one or more of the following lines of business:  car repair, rerailing, track maintenance/repair/new builds, load adjust/transfer, and/or lifting/recovery.  Ensures that all activities are carried out in a safe, effective, professional, and efficient manner so as to protect employees and the assets of the Company.


    1. Provides direction/leadership and daily work assignments to Supervisors and Foreman. Ensures that subordinates have man-power and materials/equipment necessary to perform work while meeting customers’ expectations and Cranemasters standards for quality and safety. 
    2. Ensures that job briefings are conducted and reinforces commitment to safety through identification and mitigation of potential hazards.
    3. Establishes and maintains positive/professional relationship with oversight agencies as required (includes FRA and other agencies that participate in emergency response projects).
    4. Directly interacts with railroad customers at all levels (managers, superintendents, engineers). Proactively communicates and follows-up with them on projects and ensures their expectations are met.
    5. Prepares bids/quotes for work/services ensuring accuracy of estimates, profit margin, man-power scheduling, and equipment allocation. Seeks input/approval from Division Manager prior to submission of bid documents to customer(s).
    6. Prepares payroll data, project reports, equipment usage, man-power/labor hours, and other data ensuring accuracy and submits same meeting established deadlines.
    7. As needed prices out rental equipment, and obtains pricing information for purchases of tools, equipment, repairs, and services; obtains approval(s) in accordance with established policy and executes purchase ensuring delivery/receipt.
    8. Coaches and counsel’s supervisors, foreman and employees to develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities. Provides on-the-job training and opportunities for employees to develop their skill sets including technical skills and interpersonal relationship and communication skills. 
    9. Ensures that Cranemasters policies, procedures and work processes are carried out properly. Trains employees to ensure that they understand policies and procedures and comply as needed for smooth operations and flow of communications across the organization.
    10. Develops and continuously improves communication skills to better lead work crews, further customer relationships and foster other relationships.
    11. Provides regular/relevant feedback to subordinates. Assesses employee performance in order to conduct performance reviews. 
    12. Completes weekly safety observations.
    13. Maintains equipment according to the manufacturers and Cranemasters standards. Reports any out of service equipment to Dispatch as soon as possible.
    14. Other duties as assigned.




    Required Travel:  Yes, frequent overnight travel



    Subordinate Positions:  Supervisors, Foremen, Driver/Operators, Laborers



    Immediate Supervisor’s Title:  Division Manager




    Required Skills and Experience:


    1. Thorough understanding of and adherence to safety policies and procedures
    2. General knowledge of railroad and related industries with minimum of 5 years progressively responsible management or supervisory experience. Education to include:  High School Diploma/ GED or equivalent.
    3. Knowledge of D.O.T. regulations including permitting for overweight and oversized loads, FRA regulations, and Cranemasters safety policies and procedures.
    4. Possesses technical skills in operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and/or journeyman level technical skills/ability in welding or related trades.
    5. Must project positive and professional image to customers, co-workers, and general public.
    6. Proficient computer skills (including MS Office programs) and ability to learn additional software as required for operational needs including submission of project reports, payroll data, labor hours, etc.
    7. Team player with ability to participate in planning processes and work with others to meet goals and objectives of Cranemasters in all circumstances.
    8. Strong and proactive communication skills as necessary to coach/counsel/provide feedback to employees as well as peers and superiors, conduct job briefings, debriefings and communicate as necessary to improve and enhance the culture of the organization.
    9. Must project positive and professional image to customers, co-workers, work crews, and general public.
    10. Must possess a valid drivers’ license with good driving record; preference for possession of Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
    11. Able to read, write and speak English.
    12. Must pass qualification tests as required (includes: ERail Safe and other training/safety programs).
    13. Must meet 24/7 availability to respond to emergency calls for service including weekends and holidays.



    Physical Demands:


    1. Constantly on feet
    2. Walking on uneven surfaces and in ballast.
    3. Working in ALL weather conditions.
    4. Working extended hours.
    5. Regular bending, twisting, stooping, standing, and / or walking.
    6. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds; loads in excess of 50 pounds and which can be reduced, should be made lighter.
    7. Obtains assistance when lifting items weighing more than 75 pounds, or items which present ergonomic challenges in lifting/movement/placement.




    • Cranemasters is a 24/7 emergency service provider to the railroad industry and as such, the Manager is subject to work outside of normal working hours including nights, weekends and/or holidays.
