  • Overview

    Basic Function:        


    As directed by the Division Manager/Assistant Division Manager leads work crews in performance of daily work and emergency response needs in support of lifting and recovery operations on behalf of railroad customers.


    Essential Functions:



    Responsible for leading field operations for service delivery in response to derailments.  Responsible for leading by example and accomplishment of assignments through hands-on leadership of work crew ensuring the safety of the crew, efficiency and work quality.


    1. Ensures that work crew is prepared to carry out assignments.   Oversees selection of required equipment, materials and manpower.
    2. Conducts job briefing and reinforces commitment to safety of employees through identification of potential areas of concern.
    3. Distributes work assignments. Ensures that crew members have materials, tools and/or equipment as needed to carryout assigned tasks.
    4. Actively participates in oversight of task accomplishment as required for project completion. Directs assignments and equipment operation and use of manual labor as may be required for completion of project. Establishes and maintains positive/professional relationship with oversight agencies as required (includes FRA and other agencies that participate in emergency response projects).
    5. Directly interacts with railroad customers at all levels (managers, superintendents, engineers).       Proactively communicates and follows-up with them on projects.
    6. Submits payroll information, project reports, prepares quotes for customers, prices out rental equipment and “shops” as necessary for purchases of tools, equipment, repairs and services.      
    7. Upon completion of project/operations ensures that work crews restore vehicles and equipment to established level of cleanliness and operational condition. Re-stocks supplies for vehicles and equipment upon return to home base.      
    8. Identifies opportunities and initiates action to obtain scrap materials for future use including parts for re-use and disposal for cost benefit of the company.
    9. Coaches and counsels employees in order to develop their knowledge, skills and abilities. Provides on-the-job training and provides opportunities for employees to develop their skill sets including technical skills and interpersonal relationship and communication skills.
    10. Ensures that Cranemasters policies, procedures and work processes are carried out properly. Trains employees to ensure that they understand policies and procedures and comply as needed for smooth operations and flow of communications across the organization.
    11. Develops and continuously improves communication skills in order to better lead work crews, further customer relationships and foster other relationships. 
    12. Assesses employee performance in order to conduct performance reviews.       Meets with employee in order to provide accurate and valuable feedback regarding job performance.       Identifies training needs and goals for further development of employee’s skills and works to ensure that employee is afforded opportunity during the following review period to attain established goals. Performing any and all duties which ensure the safe, smooth and efficient functioning of the department.
    13. Complete weekly safety observations.
    14. Ensures required documentation (data or electronic) is completed accurately and submitted on a timely basis in order to facilitate billing process.
    15. Maintain Re-rail equipment and other Division equipment according to the manufacturers and Cranemasters standards. Cleanliness and image are of the utmost importance. Report any out of service equipment to Dispatch as soon as possible and report the date and time it is returned to service.
    16. Maintain your company vehicle to a point where one of the owners could ride with you and not take exception to the condition of your vehicle.
    17. Other duties as assigned.


    Required Skills and Experience:


    1. Possesses technical skills in operation of multiple pieces of equipment including cranes, trucks, trailers, backhoes, excavators, etc.
    2. Strong and proactive communication skills in order to coach/counsel employees, conduct job briefings, debriefings and communicate across the organization as necessary to improve and enhance organizational effectiveness.
    3. Thorough understanding of and adherence to safety policies and procedures.
    4. Must project positive and professional image to customers, co-workers and general public.
    5. Able to read, write and speak English.
    6. Must pass qualification tests as required (examples: CPR, First Aid, etc.).
    7. General understanding of freight car components.
    8. Demonstrated ability to read and understand crane load charts.
    9. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of capacities and acceptable uses of various types of rigging.
    10. Demonstrated understanding of transportation and permitting of oversize/overweight loads.


    Physical Demands:

    1. Accepting responsibility can cause occasional stress.
    2. Constantly on feet
    3. Walking / carrying loads on uneven surfaces and in ballast.
    4. Working in ALL weather conditions.
    5. Working extended hours.
    6. Constant bending, twisting, stooping, standing and / or walking.
    7. Regular lifting of up to 50 pounds; loads in excess of 50 pounds and which can be reduced, should be made lighter.
    8. Employee must obtain assistance when lifting items weighing more than 75 pounds, or items which present ergonomic challenges in lifting/movement/placement.




    Cranemasters is a 24/7 emergency service provider to the railroad industry and as such, the ReRail Supervisor will be subject to work outside of normal working hours including nights, weekends and/or holidays.


    Required Certifications and Licenses:


    1. Valid Driver’s License.
    2. E-Rail Safe.
    3. CSX, NS and other contractors On-Track Safety.
    4. Rigging Inspection.
    5. Other certifications will be obtained as required.
